Are you holding your company back?
Comin’ hot with a question you probably (should) want to know the answer to, but you might resist it at first. Why? Because it’s going to require you to do a bit of honest self-analysis.
I’m talking to you my business owner, entrepreneur, solopreneur, and freelancer friends.
The question is this: Are you holding your company back?
First, be honest. When you ask yourself that question. Does any resistance come up? Defense? Anything else? That’s normal. Simply take note and be honest about what’s coming up for you.
Second, can you be open enough and love your company and team enough to step in and discover if and how you might be holding your company back?
Third, the good news is that if you can do this with open hands and an eager mindset, then you can dramatically impact the growth of your company.
Here’s how:
Over the next few weeks, we are going to introduce you to several types of Cognitive Biases, give you specific examples of each of them and how they impact business leaders, and share what you can do about it.
So what is a cognitive bias?
Cognitive Bias is simply a scientific term for describing how our brains use decision-making shortcuts. Our brains are trying to help us out and expend the fewest calories to survive and thrive in this world. But sometimes this doesn’t serve us well.
As defined by healthline.com:
“A cognitive bias is a flaw in your reasoning that leads you to misinterpret information from the world around you and to come to an inaccurate conclusion. Because you are flooded with information from millions of sources throughout the day, your brain develops ranking systems to decide which information deserves your attention and which information is important enough to store in memory. It also creates shortcuts meant to cut down on the time it takes for you to process information. The problem is that the shortcuts and ranking systems aren’t always perfectly objective because their architecture is uniquely adapted to your life experiences.”
For example, I’ll let you in on a little secret…
...everyone has cognitive biases. We all struggle with some or all of these in different contexts in life. So it’s not actually a question of if we have them but which ones and to what extent in our roles as business leaders.
Awareness is step one. Then when you become aware of your biases, you can hedge yourself and proactively combat them so they don’t negatively impact your business.
